What is a Substance Use Disorder?

substance use disorder is another way to say someone has become addicted to a substance. As a result of their use of this substance, you or a loved one can suffer from various physical, emotional, social, or professional consequences.

One of the biggest challenges surrounding substance abuse disorders is that there are many different types. Potential addictions include:

  • Alcohol addiction or binge drinking
  • Illicit drug use, such as an addiction to opioids, heroin, or methamphetamines
  • Prescription drug misuse, including abusing painkillers, benzodiazepines, or tranquilizers

What Substance Abuse Treatments Are Available?

Fortunately, Mending Fences offers an array of world-class substance abuse treatment programs. We know that multiple factors may influence the development of a substance use disorder. That’s why we work with each patient to develop a multi-faceted treatment plan that is comprehensive, customized, and individualized based on your needs.

We also know that you or a loved one may benefit from medical attention or additional resources after discharge. As such, we offer multiple post-discharge plans, including alumni groups, to help you find support when your stay with us is completed.

We have an array of professional and highly credentialed staff that can give you or a loved one a pathway to recovery from alcoholism, drug abuse, and many other addictions. Substance abuse treatments available include:

We will work with you to develop a comprehensive inventory of your needs and create an individualized treatment program that addresses your personal mental health and substance abuse disorder needs.
  • Medication-Assisted Treatment: Some substances — like opioids — respond positively to a combination of Medicated Assisted Treatment (MAT) and therapy. We’re certified to provide multiple types of MAT, allowing you to benefit from the most up-to-date treatment regimen and helping you recover from this debilitating disease.
  • Group therapy: When facilitated correctly, group therapy allows you to learn that you aren’t alone. Clients in group therapy can seek additional guidance, share stories, and develop lifelong friendships with individuals who are also receiving treatment for the same illnesses.
  • Recreational therapy: At Mending Fences, we have seen the power of various recreational therapies, including equine-assisted psychotherapy and music therapy. We have trained specialists who can help you use these programs to enhance your recovery and keep you sober.

We know that substance abuse treatment programs and mental health challenges require multiple types of therapy. That’s why we work with you, your loved ones, and your entire medical team to help create a sense of safety that will encourage you to stay sober long after discharge.

What Causes Substance Abuse?

The causes of substance abuse are multi-faceted and often interact with each other, creating a complex series of reasons behind each person’s addiction. Potential causes include:

  • Mental health issues: There is a well-researched link between mental health and various addictions. In these cases, an individual will need whole-person, comprehensive treatment to address the addiction issue and their mental health challenges.
  • Genetics: Most addiction-related issues have some sort of genetic component, and a person with a relative with a substance abuse disorder has a higher risk of developing the same disorder.
  • Environmental: Many life circumstances — such as stress, anxiety, an injury, or another type of traumatic event — can cause someone to abuse any number of substances.
  • Social: There are often social pressures to addiction, including having friends or family members who use illicit substances. In these instances, providing care that addresses social causes can be an excellent substance abuse treatment.

As you can see, many issues can cause someone to develop a substance abuse disorder. Mending Fences will work with you or a loved one to ensure that we address all causes of your substance abuse, working with you to develop a treatment plan that addresses your specific triggers.

What Are the Signs of Substance Abuse?

The signs of substance abuse display themselves in many ways, including:

  • Physical changes: Weight loss or gain, difficulty sleeping, bags under the eyes, a change in color, running nose, increased or decreased energy, or changes in appetite.
  • Emotional changes: Increased periods of anger, sadness, or withdrawal, wildly fluctuating emotional states, a lack of motivation, or other unexplained changes in personality.
  • Social changes: Difficulties maintaining relationships at home or work, change in social groups, increased risk-taking, or an increase in secretive behavior.

Ultimately, the alcohol or drugs that someone is abusing — combined with other physical or mental illnesses — will impact the development of a personalized plan to help a person recover. At Mending Fences, our trained professionals know what signs to look for and can help you or a loved one manage substance abuse’s specific causes and effects. More to the point: If you recognize any of these signs in yourself or someone you love, it may be time to seek professional help.
